NCC Commits To Deepening Local Content Value Chain, Says Maida | Cliptv Online

On Friday, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) hosted a virtual Stakeholders’ Forum as part of its participatory rule-making process to deliberate on the proposed licensing framework for Application-to-Person (A2P) Messaging. The initiative aims to address key challenges and opportunities within this critical segment of the telecommunications ecosystem.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, opened the forum with an insightful address, emphasizing the integral role A2P messaging plays in modern communication. He highlighted its significance for businesses, consumers, and the government, stating, “A2P messaging drives efficiency, enhances communication, and supports socio-economic development.”

A2P Transforming Communication

Dr. Maida explained that A2P messaging has become a vital tool for delivering transactional, promotional, and service-related notifications across sectors, ranging from banking and healthcare to government updates and promotional campaigns. He noted:

For the Government: It facilitates efficient public service delivery and communication with citizens.

For Consumers: It ensures timely, secure, and reliable access to essential updates and services.

For the Industry: It drives innovation, fosters competition, and supports sustainable growth.

A2P Ecosystem Challenges

Despite its importance, the A2P messaging landscape in Nigeria faces challenges such as fraud, spam, data privacy concerns, and inequitable value distribution across the ecosystem. These issues affect businesses and consumers while threatening the potential of A2P messaging as a sustainable communication tool.

The proposed regulatory framework seeks to address these concerns by ensuring fairness, transparency, and security within the A2P messaging ecosystem.

Sustainable Growth

NCC emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing effective regulations. Dr. Maida stated, “Effective regulation stems from inclusivity and collaboration. This forum is an opportunity for all stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions.”

In addition, the Commission urged operators, aggregators, businesses, service providers, and consumers to provide feedback, share experiences, and offer recommendations to refine the proposed framework.

Innovation and Protection

Dr. Maida reassured participants of the NCC’s commitment to creating a regulatory environment that balances innovation with consumer protection. He further encouraged active participation, highlighting the NCC’s goal to build a sustainable and thriving A2P messaging ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders.

Furthermore, the forum is expected to set the foundation for a robust regulatory framework that will unlock new growth opportunities, promote fair competition, and safeguard consumers in the Nigerian telecommunications sector.
