Education: National Youth Council of Nigeria Imota Local Branch Donates School Materials to Pupils Across LCDA | ClipTV Online

To mitigate the educational challenges faced by pupils and their parents, Imota NYCN Gifts notebooks to school across LCDA. The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Imota Local Branch, has donated over 3,000 notebooks across the Local Council Development Area (LCDA). These books were distributed among five schools within the Imota LCDA. The project was carried out on Monday, marking the completion of the first phase.

The action was based on research conducted to identify the challenges pupils face. It was noted that some pupils needed more than just notebooks. Comrade Adebogun Oriyomi Modupe, the NYCN Imota Local Branch Coordinator, highlighted some of the findings of the survey. “We noticed that some pupils’ school uniforms are in very poor condition,” he stated. “Also, many of them lack adequate writing materials. This is the fourth week after resumption,” he stressed, “yet some pupils do not have a single exercise book. How would they cope?” he asked.

He further stated that some pupils have no shoes, while others lack school bags. “These issues have necessitated the executive of the Youth Council to donate school kits, including uniforms, sandals, shoes, bags, and exercise books.”

Adebogun further noted that the initiative is not only for current pupils but also for out-of-school children. Hence, seven pupils were enrolled in this first phase of the project. These newly enrolled pupils were placed on scholarships, covering all their school materials for the entire duration of primary school. The scholarships include school books, uniforms, fees (where applicable), and other school-related expenses, excluding food.

Each parent or guardian signed a document prepared by the Imota NYCN to pledge their commitment to their wards’ success. The document stated that the guardian would monitor the pupils and ensure parental obligations were met. These obligations include providing food, ensuring school attendance, and attending Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) meetings.

As the intervention progressed, other challenges that were uncovered will be addressed in the second phase of the project.

Some of the schools visited include St. John’s Anglican Primary School, Community Primary School (CPS), and Local Government Primary School. Other schools also are Ansar-Ud-Deen (AUD) and Abejoye Primary School.

Additionally, Mrs. Adeyemo Ajarat Abiodun, Head Teacher of the Local Government Primary School, indicated that the NYCN project is a laudable one, acknowledging that the lack of notebooks is a common challenge among pupils. “In their academics, our common challenge with them is the lack of notebooks,” she said. Commending the Imota NYCN, she added, “This is commendable. These pupils will never forget you. Secondly, you have equipped them, especially the out-of-school pupils, bringing them back to school. It is truly a laudable effort.”

Prayers and Inspirations

The Head Teacher, thanking the sponsors for their support, said, “Not many people are interested in helping others.” She then offered prayers for the sponsors’ continued success and emphasized the emotional and psychological impact this support will have on the pupils.

Mrs. Rafiat Olasunkanmi, who introduced three of the newly enrolled pupils to the NYCN, shared her motives. She however recounted that she had observed that one of the children was in dire need of education. She explained that all she could do was introduce the children to someone who could help, and she eventually came across the NYCN Imota.

Moreover, Reverend Mrs. Ruth Ajibola, School Manager of Community Primary School (CPS), recounted some of the challenges the school is facing. She noted that the NYCN’s intervention was admirable and commendable. She emphasized the importance of giving back to society, stating that the NYCN’s “intervention brought great relief to the school.”

The manager also noted that some pupils complained of not eating before coming to school, which affected their learning process. She acknowledged that many of the pupils’ academic challenges are the result of the harsh economic conditions their parents face.
