To ensure safety and prevent building collapses, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has recently mandated all developers secure authorization letter to commence a construction. Nevertheless, a two-storey building located in Aguda, Coker Local Council Development Area (LCDA), partially collapsed during a heavy downpour on Wednesday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 10am, prompted immediate concern among the residents who feared the worst. However, in a statement released by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, it was confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the collapse.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, detailed the swift response following a distress call received at approximately 10:29 am. “Our rescue team promptly arrived at the scene by 10:57 am, in coordination with other agencies to manage the situation efficiently,” Adeseye stated.

The coordinated response included teams from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, the Lagos State Safety Commission, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force from Aguda Division, the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, and health officials from Coker Aguda LCDA.

“The collaborative efforts of these agencies ensured the area was secured and no lives were lost,” Adeseye remarked. Despite the severity of the collapse, the prompt intervention of emergency responders successfully mitigate the potential for injury or further disaster.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown at the moment, with investigations currently ongoing. “Our team is thoroughly examining the circumstances that led to this incident,” Adeseye added. “We are committed to uncovering the root cause to prevent future occurrences.”

Residents in the area expressed their relief at the lack of casualties but voiced ongoing concerns about the structural integrity of other buildings in the vicinity. “It’s a miracle that no one was hurt,” one resident commented. “We hope the authorities will also look into the safety of other old buildings in this area.”

As investigations continue, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service assures the public that updates will be provided and all necessary measures will be taken to ensure safety. “We are implementing steps to secure the affected building and prevent any further risk to the public,” Adeseye concluded.
