Eruemukohwarien: Dignity Deserved as Civic Space Pressure Increases

Chapter 4 four of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution as amended, specifically section 40 states: Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons…for the protection of his interests.

Therefore a protest for the interest of an individual or a group is constitutional in Nigeria and across the globe.

The Eruemukohwarien, Delta State incident on Thursday is however an alarming situation that requires the wisdom and interest of a global community.

It was the case of a peaceful protest by women from the Eruemukohwarien community over alleged unfair treatment of local workers, poor community development, and environmental issues related to oil activities has raised new concerns about civic freedoms in Nigeria.

The protesters reportedly gathered at the Ughelli Pumping Station to demand fair treatment. They are also requesting better community development, and greater accountability for local activities.

The situation reportedly worsened after some community leaders were detained. The women then regrouped and marched peacefully to call for accountability. Reports says police used teargas and live rounds, resulting in some women sustaining gunshot wounds.

Around 3:00 a.m., the community’s President-General was reportedly leaving the hospital after attending to women injured by gunfire.

This incident has highlighted broader issues surrounding citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and civic participation.

It also reflects concerns documented in the 2025 Journalism and Civic Space Status Report by the Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), which analyzed civic space in Nigeria from January to December 2025.

According to the report, 245 verified violations of civic space were recorded from 570 media reports published by 54 media outlets. Among cases with identified affected groups, ordinary citizens accounted for 133 incidents, or 54.3 percent.

The WSCIJ report emphasizes the increasing vulnerability of individuals involved in protests, dissent, and democratic activities.

Therefore, the Eruemukohwarien case raises an important question about how to address host communities without turning peaceful civic actions into triggers for conflict or violence.

For communities impacted by extractive industries, demands for fair treatment, environmental protection, job opportunities, and development are often directly linked to their daily livelihoods and well-being. Establishing trustworthy channels for dialogue and accountability is key to preventing such grievances from escalating.

This incident also highlights the importance of protecting citizens’ constitutional rights to express grievances and assemble peacefully, while ensuring that security agencies respond in a manner consistent with human rights and the rule of law.

The WSCIJ report stresses that a healthy civic space is vital for democratic growth. Its findings and incidents, such as the reported Eruemukohwarien protest, reinforce the need for stronger institutional accountability, rights-based policing, and meaningful engagement among communities, governments, and stakeholders.

Ultimately, the call for dignity, accountability, and development should not lead to violence. A strong democracy allows citizens to raise legitimate concerns, and institutions must have credible mechanisms to listen, address, and resolve them.
