Brazzaville

The joy of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Central Africa recently reached new heights. This was as the result groundbreaking ceremony for the Brazzaville Republic of the Congo Temple held, with Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, Africa Central Area President.

In his remarks, Elder Mutombo bore a powerful testimony of the blessings of temples:

“I testify to you, my brothers and sisters, that something special happens when the house of the Lord is built in a place. The powers of heaven are manifested in the sacred ordinances performed in the temple, and the Republic of Congo will never be the same again, because everywhere temples are built, the influence of the devil diminishes and the light of Christ is elevated.”

First Temple

President Russell M. Nelson first announced the temple in April 2022 general conference, marking a historic moment for Latter-day Saints in the nation. This sacred edifice is the first temple to be announced, under construction, or completed in the Republic of the Congo.

While this will be the country’s first temple, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) already hosts several. The Kinshasa DRC Temple was dedicated in 2019, the Lubumbashi DRC Temple is under construction, and temples in Kananga and Mbuji-Mayi have been announced.

The Church

The story of the Church in the Republic of the Congo reflects decades of faith and perseverance. In the 1980s, Saints who had been baptized abroad returned to Brazzaville and began organizing the Church locally. By 1992, when then-Elder Russell M. Nelson and Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited to dedicate the nation for the preaching of the gospel, the first district had already been organized.

Today, the Church has grown steadily. The Republic of the Congo is now home to nearly 14,000 members across almost 40 congregations, with faithful Saints eagerly anticipating the day when temple ordinances can be performed in their own land.

A Beacon of Light

The Latter-day Saints Temple has always been a pointer of spirituality. Members of the Church in Brazzaville and throughout the Republic of the Congo shares the same feelings as the temple which represents a promise of eternal blessings, spiritual growth, and increased strength in Christ. US placed in the country. As Elder Mutombo testified, the construction of this house of the Lord will be a spiritual turning point for the nation, bringing greater light, peace, and joy to all who enter therein.
