Digital Skills: NCC, ITU, DBI Strengthen Developmental Partnership | ClipTV Online

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it will leverage the designation of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) as an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) to expand digital literacy, strengthen digital inclusion and equip more Nigerians with skills for the digital economy.

The Commission disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the ITU Senior Digital Skills Officer, Ms. Robyn Fysh, to the NCC headquarters in Abuja.

Fysh’s visit was part of her official engagement in Nigeria following DBI’s designation as an ITU Digital Transformation Centre. DBI also serves as the ITU’s Digital Training Academy (DTA) in Nigeria.

Representing the NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Director of Research and Development, Engr. Babagana Digima, received Fysh and a DBI delegation led by its President and CEO, Mr. David Daser.

Digima said the DTC designation provides an opportunity to deepen collaboration between the NCC, DBI and ITU in expanding digital skills development and inclusion, particularly among underserved and vulnerable populations.

He described digital literacy and capacity development as critical to Nigeria’s digital economy ambitions, noting that the Commission would continue working with government agencies, state governments, development partners and other stakeholders to expand access to digital skills training.

Fysh commended the longstanding partnership between the NCC and ITU, saying the engagement provided an opportunity for the organisations to exchange ideas and explore areas for stronger collaboration on digital transformation and skills development.

According to her, the ITU Digital Transformation Centres initiative, launched in partnership with Cisco in 2019, has reached more than 870,000 participants globally, with women accounting for more than half of the beneficiaries. The initiative focuses on providing practical digital skills to people in underserved communities to improve employability, entrepreneurship and participation in the digital economy.

Daser expressed appreciation to the NCC for its support in helping DBI attain the ITU designation.

He said DBI had become the first institution globally to simultaneously hold ITU Academy Training Centre (ATC) and Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) status, describing the development as an opportunity to scale digital skills training and certification across Nigeria.

Daser called for continued NCC support to extend the initiative to underserved communities through the Commission’s infrastructure, networks and partnerships.

He added that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Literacy Framework, which targets 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.

The DBI president said achieving the target would require stronger collaboration and sustained investment in digital skills development, particularly for underserved populations.

He said the DTC status would position DBI to expand its impact and contribute to developing a digitally skilled workforce for Nigeria and Africa.
