Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) today rescued 18 seriously injured accident victims at Adekunle inward Adeniji Adele on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, disclosed that the 18 seriously injured passengers were rescued by LASTMA officials from Zone (1) Lagos Island.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a fully loaded LT Commercial Bus (FKJ 872 YA), while traveling at high speed, lost control due to a brake failure. The bus was on the verge of falling into the lagoon before it was stopped by the railings of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Despite the truck driver fleeing the scene after the accident, police officers from the Adeniji Adele Police Station provided security backup during the rescue operation conducted by LASTMA officials.

Ojo-Oniyun Olamide, also known as One Alpha, Zone 1 Lagos Island, led the recovery operations. His team promptly evacuated the LT Commercial bus from the road, ensuring unhindered vehicular movement toward Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island.

Meanwhile, a marine rescue team was deployed into the lagoon to conduct a search and rescue mission, ensuring the safety of all passengers involved in the accident.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, and other emergency stakeholders were present at the accident scene to provide support and assistance.

In response to the incident, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, cautioned the motoring public against overspeeding and urged them to ensure their vehicles undergo proper checks, including the braking system, before embarking on any journey within or outside the state.

This commendable display of swift action and coordination by LASTMA officials highlights their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Lagos residents and visitors alike.

Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation progresses.
