To foster digital transformation and inclusivity in Nigeria, the United Kingdom has unveiled its Digital Development Strategy (DDS), targeting key areas for advancement in the country’s technological landscape. This initiative, announced during a workshop with technology journalists at the residence of the Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, underscores the UK’s commitment to transferring cutting-edge technologies to Nigeria, its prime market.
With Nigeria playing a central role in the UK’s development agenda, the Digital Access Programme Adviser & Country Lead, Mr. Idongesit Udoh, highlighted the interconnected objectives of the DDS. These include Digital Transformation, Digital Inclusion, Digital Responsibility, and Digital Sustainability, aiming to catalyze the economy, ensure universal access, foster a secure digital environment, and leverage technology for environmental sustainability.
As part of the DDS, the UK plans to implement Last-mile Connectivity initiatives to provide basic connectivity in remote areas, Digital Public Infrastructure for society-wide digital services, and initiatives to address the gender digital divide. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on Artificial Intelligence to drive rapid evolution and eliminate risks associated with digital disparities.
Furthermore, the UK High Commission revealed its extensive business transactions with Nigeria, amounting to a significant seven billion pounds last year alone, showcasing the country’s pivotal role in the UK’s economic agenda.
In light of this groundbreaking strategy, Nigeria stands poised to witness a transformative digital future, marked by inclusivity, sustainability, and accelerated development.
