Sister Kathleen Johnson Eyring, the beloved wife of President Henry B. Eyring, who serves as the second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully on Sunday. She was 82 years old. Her family was with her at the time of her passing, according to a statement from the church.

Sister Eyring was born on May 11, 1941, in San Francisco, California, to parents J. Cyril and LaPrele Lindsay Johnson. After completing her high school education, during which she held numerous leadership roles and earned the title of valedictorian, she furthered her education at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1961, while attending a devotional while at summer school in Boston, she had the serendipitous opportunity to meet Henry B. Eyring, a young Harvard student. Upon meeting her, he thought, “If I could only be with her, I could be every good thing I ever wanted to be.”

Sister Eyring and Henry B. Eyring were united in marriage on July 19, 1962, in the Logan Utah Temple. They initially settled in California, where their family grew to include their sons Henry, Stuart, and Matthew. Subsequently, the family relocated to Idaho in 1970 when President Eyring was appointed as the president of Ricks College, now known as BYU–Idaho.

Their journey took them to Utah in 1977, as President Eyring assumed the role of deputy commissioner of church education within the church. In the years that followed, their family expanded with the addition of another son and two daughters. President Eyring was called to the church’s Quorum of Twelve Apostles in 1995 and later to the First Presidency in 2007.

Sister Eyring’s contributions to the church extended beyond her role as a supportive wife. She served in numerous formal church responsibilities, including the production of a congregational newsletter for many years. However, it was her quieter acts of compassion that had a profound impact. Her son, Matthew J. Eyring, remembered her as someone who extended her love and the love of the Savior to those who had faced adversity and sorrow.

Sister Eyring was a gifted writer and provided editorial guidance to her husband throughout his career and during her church service. Beyond church-related writing, she authored a young adult novel, which earned a statewide prize for young adult literature in 1979. She also recorded family memories through scripts for family events and co-published a monthly family newsletter.

In later years, Sister Eyring supported her husband during his recovery from cancer surgery in 2005. When he was called to the First Presidency in 2007, she began to experience memory lapses. Throughout this challenging period, President Eyring lovingly cared for her. He often brought her to his office, where she could read and rest in a reclining chair while he was in meetings.

President Eyring has described Kathleen as “a person who always made me want to be the very best I can be.”
