In a startling turn of events, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has testified in court, vehemently denying any involvement in the alleged $6.2 million fraud case against Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank.
Mustapha categorically refuted claims of approving the $6.2 million for Emefiele to pay international election observers. He stated that he was unaware of the transaction up until the time he left office.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had accused Emefiele of forging documents to obtain $6.2 million from the CBN, allegedly based on a request from Mustapha, dated January 26, 2023.
During his testimony, Mustapha emphasized several key points:
- He clarified that the Nigerian government has no obligation to pay foreign election observers, refuting any involvement in such financial transactions.
- Mustapha highlighted that decisions made by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) are not communicated via letters, casting doubt on the authenticity of the alleged letter requesting the funds.
- He pointed out discrepancies in the signature on the purported letter, stating that he never received correspondence from former President Buhari ending with “Please accept with my highest regard.” This raised suspicions about the legitimacy of the signature.
- Mustapha expressed unfamiliarity with the term “Special Appropriation Provision,” indicating that the terms he recognized were “appropriation” and “supplementary.”
As Mustapha’s testimony unfolded, it raised serious questions about the authenticity of the documents presented by the EFCC and cast doubt on the allegations against Emefiele. The trial continues as the court seeks to unravel the truth behind the alleged fraud case.
