The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 11 suspects in connection with the alleged vandalism and theft of critical infrastructure along the newly constructed Coastal Road.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing on the Lagos command.
CP said the arrests followed intelligence gathering and follow-up investigations into the persistent vandalism of government infrastructure. He particularly highlighted events along the Coastal Road.
According to him, 10 suspects were arrested on August 17 in connection with the alleged vandalism of the newly constructed Coastal Road. The suspects were identified and under thirty years of age.
Vandalised iron materials were recovered during the operation.
The Commissioner said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly connected to the repeated vandalism of the Coastal Road infrastructure.
He added that the suspects had made confessional statements regarding their alleged involvement. The CP further noted that investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the network and bring all those responsible to justice.
Police Warn Vandals
The Commissioner expressed concern over the persistent vandalism of critical infrastructures. He describied the destruction and theft of materials from the Coastal Road as a threat to major government investments and public safety.
He said the Command would continue to work closely with the Ministry of Works, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Engr. Olufemi Dare, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen security around critical infrastructure.
As the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) is responsible for the protection of government infrastructure, such as pipelines, roads, and other taxpayer-funded investments, the CP confirmed adequate interagency collaboration with the agency.
“The Command will not allow criminals to undermine these developmental efforts,” Fatai said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities around public infrastructure.
The Commissioner further assured that suspects found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law
He added that their fundamental rights will however be respected.
Furthermore, he reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations aimed at protecting government infrastructure and preventing further acts of vandalism across the State.
