CONYSSA Partners FRSC, LASTMA for Lifesaving Road Safety

In a bold and timely intervention aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting a culture of safety among Lagosians, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), in partnership with key government agencies and community-based organizations, has launched the Eko Safe Roads Campaign.

Held in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organization, the campaign appealed to road users to desist from the use of mobile phones and other distractions while on the road.

“Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility” – Lagos Safety Commission

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Engr. Lanre Omojola, representing the Director-General, emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive safety practices.

“Safety is key, and we must take it seriously,” he stated. “Fire extinguishers in vehicles must be checked regularly to ensure they are not expired. Some drivers even encourage lawlessness, urging others to drive against traffic in a bid to save time. These behaviors are dangerous and must stop.”

Omojola warned against reckless driving practices, including beating traffic lights and speeding, noting that self-awareness and adherence to traffic rules are fundamental to eradicating unsafe driving habits.

Addressing Distractions and Promoting Safer Roads

Amb. Akanni Michael, the State Coordinator of CONYSSA, outlined the objectives of the campaign. He described the initiative as a critical step in reducing road crashes caused by mobile phone use.

“The use of mobile phones while driving or even walking on busy roads is becoming increasingly dangerous,” he said. “This campaign aims to educate and sensitize Lagosians on the risks associated with distracted driving.”

According to him, the campaign is also designed to instill a culture of accountability and alertness among both drivers and pedestrians.

Stakeholders Demand Action

Dr. Adebamiji Oluniyi, a National Patron of CONYSSA, further reinforced the campaign’s call to action. He advised drivers and pedestrians alike to prioritize safety and eliminate all distractions while navigating Lagos roads.

“Every text, call, or moment of distraction can be fatal,” he warned. “It’s time we all take personal responsibility for our actions on the road.”

Adding his voice, Engineer Chinedu Ogwus, President of the Ogwus Youth Empowerment and Community Development Organization, described the campaign as a “lifesaving initiative.”

“This event is special for Lagosians. It’s born out of a need to halt the rising rate of accidents caused by mobile phone use while driving. Distractions kill,” he emphasized.

Engineer Ogwus also called on the government to do more in addressing infrastructural issues:

“Most of our road accidents are linked to poor road conditions. The government must fix bad roads and rid the streets of individuals who cause distractions. We’re also advocating for CCTV installation at junctions and major roads to combat criminality. It’s very achievable,” he concluded.

Looking Ahead

As the Eko Safe Roads Campaign gains traction, organizers say it will continue to engage communities, schools, and transport unions in promoting safer road habits. The coalition urges all Lagosians to take the message to heart: Put down the phone—save a life.
