In a candid interview on the Leaderboard podcast hosted by Fisayo Fosudo, renowned music producer and Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, opened up about some of the missed opportunities and regrets he has had in his career. He revealed that he had missed out on signing some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars, including Wizkid, Davido, Simi, Teni, and Falz.
Don Jazzy explained that he couldn’t sign Wizkid to his former record label, Mo’hits, because Banky W had already signed him to EME (Empire Mates Entertainment) before he had the chance. Recognizing Wizkid’s immense talent, Don Jazzy admitted that signing him would have been amazing for his label.
Regarding Davido, Don Jazzy revealed that he had the opportunity to sign him but decided against it. He believed that Davido had the potential to succeed without the support of a record label, and his instincts proved right as Davido went on to become one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
Expressing his regrets, Don Jazzy mentioned that he also missed the chance to sign Simi and Teni, two talented artists who have achieved remarkable success in the Nigerian music industry. Despite admiring their work, he didn’t seize the opportunity to bring them under his wing.
Additionally, Don Jazzy disclosed that there was almost a deal with rapper Falz The Bahd Guy, known for his unique style and socially conscious lyrics. However, the deal fell through, and Don Jazzy expressed his admiration for Falz’s work.
These revelations provide insight into the challenges and decision-making processes faced by Don Jazzy throughout his career as a music producer. Despite these missed opportunities, Don Jazzy’s impact in the Nigerian music industry remains significant, and he continues to nurture and promote new talents through his Mavin Records label.
