In a swift move to ease the current food security challenges, the Nigeria Customs Service has heeded the Federal Government directives. This directive was earlier announced on Tuesday to distribute all food items in the custody of Nigeria customs service.
The Nigeria Customs Service set to distribute seized food items to members of the public from Friday. These items include Rice, Beans, Oil, Millets, etc.
In a demonstration on Thursday, the process was outlined, requiring individuals to demonstrate genuine need and possess a verifiable National Identity Number (NIN). All customs building across the nation will be available for this exercise from Friday.
However, the rice has been rebagged to 25Kg other than the standard 50Kg. This is to ensure easy carriage and price affordability.
Participants will purchase a 25KG bag of rice for N10,000 only as part of the initiative aimed at addressing food security challenges.
The price was slashed to enable the item get to the grassroot. The initial process of including a N500 processing was also eliminated to avoid electronic difficulties for the dregs.
Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi emphasizes the nationwide scope of the intervention, intending to replicate the exercise across the nation. “The process will be as seamless as possible”, he said. “Other security agencies will also be available to avoid stampede, safety, and easy in the processing.”
Collaboration with agencies like the Nigeria Police Force, EFCC, and others, coordinated by the National Security Adviser, underscores the joint commitment to societal protection. That National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been involved in this intervention to ensure safety.
Customs is also assuring the public that the items are certified safe for consumption by NAFDAC. Over 20,000 bags of rice seized in the past one week will be included in the distribution.
This initiative represents a concerted effort to alleviate food shortages and safeguard the well-being of Nigerians amidst prevailing challenges.
As the food security challenges have become a national disaster, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is devising means to ease people’s burden. This approach and others in the pipeline will be evidence of the President’s sincere interest in improving the state of affairs.
