The Lagos State Government has officially handed over the Ikorodu Sub-Region Master Plan for 2016–2036 to community leaders, elders, and other stakeholders. This development was reported by our correspondent, who obtained the information from the state government’s official portal on Wednesday.

Background and Challenges

Historically, Ikorodu was primarily an agrarian region with a small number of villages. However, the recent significant population increase has led to various challenges, including flooding, land management conflicts, and traffic congestion.

Official Handover Event

During a formal event held at the Ikorodu Town Hall on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, expressed gratitude to the community leaders and residents for their support in transforming the master plan into a reality. He highlighted that the document would serve as a comprehensive guide for the region’s physical development until 2036, focusing on key areas such as land use, transportation, physical and socio-economic infrastructure, and environmental management.

Dr. Olumide stated:

“I am deeply excited that the people of Ikorodu Division have always demonstrated ownership of the Ikorodu Sub-Region Master Plan, right from its preparation to the completion stage, and this is being demonstrated here today with the impressive turnout for the launch of the master plan. I am elated to see the who-is-who in the sub-region in this hall, including traditional rulers, past and serving public officials, and other well-meaning stakeholders.”

The master plan aims to address the region’s development needs systematically and sustainably, ensuring that the area’s growth is well-managed and beneficial to all residents. This comprehensive approach is expected to mitigate the current challenges and lay a solid foundation for future development.

The handover of the Ikorodu Sub-Region Master Plan marks a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards sustainable development, with community involvement being a crucial element of its successful implementation.
