In a decisive move aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and upholding the law, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) conducted a vigorous enforcement operation targeting over 100 private and commercial vehicles found operating illegal parking and garages on top bridges across the state.
Leading this enforcement operation, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, revealed that this crackdown came on the heels of the expiration of a 7-day ‘Vacation Order’ issued on Monday, 16th October, 2023. This order had mandated motorists and commercial bus drivers to immediately vacate all illegal parking and garages situated on the city’s bridges.
The primary goal of this operation was to completely eliminate the infractions causing traffic congestion on these vital bridges. The enforcement action resulted in the contravention of over 100 private and commercial vehicles on several bridges, including Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon, Ebute-Ero, and Idumota (Cater) bridges, all located on Lagos Island.
Hon. Giwa expressed his deep concern over the actions of private and commercial bus drivers who have been operating illegal parking and garages on these bridges, characterizing them as a public nuisance. Their actions have consistently led to avoidable traffic gridlocks, inconveniencing fellow motorists and road users.
The enforcement operations are part of a continuous exercise, designed to maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards the activities of these commercial bus drivers who have been flouting the law by setting up illegal parking and garages on top of bridges. This approach is in alignment with the ‘Theme+’ agenda of the current administration, emphasizing efficient traffic flow.
Hon. Giwa stated, “We will persist in ensuring the unobstructed movement of traffic by intensifying our enforcement and clampdown operations on these defiant private and commercial bus drivers.”
He noted that the actions of these recalcitrant drivers are in direct contravention of the provisions outlined in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Hon. Giwa underscored that all the vehicles, both private and commercial, which were contravened during this operation, will face prosecution in the Lagos State Mobile Court.
