In a deliberate effort to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide, bring connectivity closer to underserved communities, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF).
The fund, officially unveiled on Friday, is designed to expand access to telecommunications services, particularly for millions of Nigerians living in remote areas. Including those where connectivity remains limited or completely unavailable.
As a strategic arm of the NCC, the USPF will play a crucial role in ensuring that no community is left behind in the country’s growing digital economy. For residents in rural areas, this initiative represents improved network coverage. Additionally USPF will open doors to education, healthcare information, financial services, and economic opportunities that depend on reliable connectivity.
The fund will also provide technical support to telecommunications companies. USPF will enable Telcos to extend their infrastructure into underserved regions. This intervention is expected to ease the burden on telecom operators. Furthermore, USPF will accelerate the rollout of essential services in areas that are often considered commercially unviable.
With the inauguration of the USPF, the NCC is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive digital development. Also USPF will ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of location, can participate meaningfully in an increasingly connected world.
