Super Eagles Drawn into Group A with Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau; Set to Rekindle Rivalry with Cote d’Ivoire

Lagos, Nigeria – The stage is set for an exciting showdown as Nigeria’s Super Eagles find themselves in Group A for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, hosted by Cote d’Ivoire. This marks the first time since Mali 2002 that the Super Eagles will face the host nation in the prestigious tournament.

Group A promises to be a fierce contest as the Super Eagles will go head-to-head with the Ivorian national team. The draw, held in Abidjan, saw the ball picked by the current African Footballer of the Year, Sadio Mane, placing two West African football giants in the same group. Notably, this matchup revives memories of Nigeria’s victory over the star-studded Ivorian side in the quarter-finals of the 2013 tournament, which the Super Eagles eventually won in South Africa.

The group also includes Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, both of which are no strangers to Nigeria. Guinea-Bissau made headlines when they shocked Nigeria in an AFCON qualifier in Abuja last March.

Historically, the Super Eagles have had memorable encounters when facing the host nations. Nigeria was drawn into Group A with hosts Mali during the 2002 AFCON. Previous tournaments also saw the Super Eagles paired with host countries like Ghana (1978), Algeria (1990), and Senegal (1992).

One standout moment occurred in 1992 when Nigeria faced Senegal in the opening match. The Super Eagles defeated the host team 2-1, with goals from Samson Siasia and the late Stephen Keshi. While Jules Bocandes equalized Siasia’s goal for Senegal, Keshi sealed the victory, leaving the home fans in early retirement.

Nigeria reached the championship game when Cote d’Ivoire last hosted the tournament in 1984.

In the other groups, Group B features Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Defending champions Senegal lead the pack in Group C, competing with Cameroon, Guinea, and Gambia. Group D sees Algeria against Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and Angola, while Group E includes Tunisia, Mali, South Africa, and Namibia. Finally, Morocco, Congo Democratic Republic, Zambia, and Tanzania will compete in Group F.

In this edition of AFCON, the top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the next stage, and the four best losers will also progress. The tournament is scheduled to run from January 13th to February 11th, 2023.
