In a display of knowledge, dedication, and a keen sense of public health, Dr. Abdul-Azeez A. Anjorin, a distinguished Nigerian Virologist and the Head of the Department of Microbiology at Lagos State University, gave a scintillating lecture on the alarming subject of deadly viruses. His expertise in virology led to an honor from the Global Center for Mass Gatherings Medicine (a WHO collaborating Center) at the 5th International Conference on Mass Gatherings Medicine, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia under the auspices of the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health at the Hilton, Riyadh.
The 5th International Conference for Mass Gatherings Medicine (ICMGM) was themed “Legacy in Global Health Security” and featured remarkable insights and groundbreaking research discussions. These discussions were led by renowned experts in Mass Gatherings Medicine from all over the world, including professionals from WHO headquarters in Geneva, EMRO, CDC, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Brown University, King Saudi University, and many other institutions. Experts in Emergency and Travel Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Public Health, Microbiology, and Vaccinology converged from more than 30 different countries, including Australia, Germany, South Africa, and Asia. The conference also hosted the Emeritus President of the World Society for Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin, who is not only a leading Virologist but also the founder and Principal Investigator for African Infectious Diseases Multidisciplinary Research and Grant (AFIDMURG), served as one of the distinguished Guest Speakers from Africa at the international conference. His presentation was titled “Disease Surveillance in Laboratory Services.”
During his presentation, Dr. Anjorin captivated his audience by rhetorically questioning if anyone would like to experience the devastating pathological effects of deadly viruses, including the terrifying impacts of Influenza, Lassa, Ebola, Nipah, Hanta, Polio, and Coronaviruses. He artfully drew comparisons between the origins and endemic situations of viral diseases in both Africa and Asia.
Dr. Anjorin’s lecture delved into the world of infectious disease surveillance. He explained the classical aetiologies for global continuous monitoring, delving into the essence and types of surveillance in laboratory services. The lecture also touched on the tools required for disease surveillance, the importance of communication in fostering laboratory networks, best practices, and quality assurance.
His presentation left an indelible mark, focusing on the critical role that laboratory services play in global health security. Dr. Anjorin’s in-depth knowledge and expertise were evident throughout the lecture, leaving his audience with valuable insights into the world of deadly viruses and the importance of surveillance and early intervention.
As a token of appreciation for his invaluable contribution to the field, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin was honored during the event. He was presented with a special plaque by the Director-General of the Global Center for Mass Gatherings Medicine (GCMGM), Prof. Anas Khan.
Dr. Abdul-Azeez ANJORIN’s academic journey has taken him through Yaba College of Technology and the Lagos State University. He later obtained a Ph.D. from the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos. Throughout his career, he has undergone extensive training at esteemed institutions, including the Luxembourg Institute of Health, ISIRV/CMC Respiratory Virus School in Vellore, and the Global Virus Network (GVN) training at the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has also gained insights from institutions like Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, NIH, Bethesda, and Argonne National Laboratory BV-BRC at the University of Chicago, Lemont, Illinois, USA.
Dr. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin’s dedication to the field of virology and his commitment to understanding and mitigating the impact of deadly viruses are truly commendable.
