The National Population Commission (NPC) has assured households that their personal information provided to enumerators during the forthcoming population and housing census will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Mr. Bala Almu-Banye, the Federal Commissioner representing Katsina State, made this disclosure during a meeting with media executives in Katsina on Wednesday. The purpose of the meeting was to update the media on the status of preparations for the 2023 Census and the next steps forward.

Almu-Banye stated that the commission has recruited an adequate number of ad hoc staff to ensure comprehensive coverage of every nook and cranny of the entire state during the exercise. These ad hoc staff will work in their respective local governments of residence to achieve the set targets.
Residents are urged to cooperate with the enumerators and provide accurate answers to the questions raised. The information collected will be treated with the strictest confidence and used solely for the purpose of the census.
“All enumerators and supervisors have taken an oath not to reveal people’s secrets,” Almu-Banye emphasized, highlighting the commitment to preserving individuals’ privacy.
To ensure efficient data transmission, the NPC will utilize Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), similar to mobile phones, to directly transmit the information to the commission’s server.
Additionally, the NPC will collaborate with traditional and community leaders to ensure accurate counting of people residing in hard-to-reach areas. These leaders will provide guides to assist enumerators in reaching remote communities and ensuring an inclusive census.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the media executives, Alhaji Bashir Ahmed, the General Manager of Gram FM, thanked the commission for involving the media in the exercise. He pledged that the media would continue to educate the public on the significance of the census to achieve its desired objective.
The NPC’s commitment to confidentiality and transparency underscores the importance of accurate data in planning and development. With cooperation from the public and the media, the upcoming census is poised to provide crucial insights for Nigeria’s progress and growth.
