The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has renamed its addiction recovery initiative to “Healing through the Savior: The Addiction Recovery Program”. The change, along with a newly updated 12-step recovery guide, aims to reinforce the central role of Jesus Christ in the healing process for those battling addictions or compulsive behaviors.

The new program name highlights the Church’s belief that lasting healing from addiction comes through turning to Jesus Christ and experiencing the transformative power of His atonement.

“Changing the name to focus more on Jesus Christ emphasizes the healing that comes through Him and His atonement,” said Blaine Maxfield, managing director of the Church’s Welfare and Self-Reliance Services. “Although it may take time, overcoming trials and addictions is possible through Jesus Christ. Through participation in Healing through the Savior: The Addiction Recovery Program, individuals can find hope, healing, and strength to rebuild their lives by turning to the Savior.”

The updated 12-step recovery framework encourages participants to embrace Christlike principles such as honesty, hope, trust in God, humility, and forgiveness. By doing so, individuals struggling with addiction can experience a change of heart and find lasting recovery.

Addiction Recovery Approach

One of the unique aspects of the Healing through the Savior program is its confidential and inclusive support network. The program is available to all individuals, regardless of Church membership, and offers free in-person and virtual recovery meetings worldwide.

The recovery groups are led by volunteer facilitators — many of whom have overcome their own addiction-related challenges. These facilitators provide participants with empathy, encouragement, and guidance throughout their recovery journey.

In 2023, the program held addiction recovery meetings in 30 different countries and offered resources in 17 different languages. Meeting times and locations can be found on the Church’s official website.
