The Church Board of Education of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently approved a series of comprehensive updates aimed at enhancing the educational experience for students within the Church Educational System (CES). The revisions, which encompass Student Ecclesiastical Endorsements, the Honor Code, and Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations, are rooted in principles, uniformity, and spiritual growth, and are anticipated to strengthen students’ relationship with Jesus Christ.

These updates are built upon three core pillars:

1. Student Ecclesiastical Endorsement: The interview process for student endorsements has been elevated to align with the ecclesiastical responsibilities of priesthood leaders. Emphasizing spiritual development and adherence to ecclesiastical standards, the updates seek to create a closer connection between students and their spiritual growth. The administration of the Honor Code, as well as Dress and Grooming policies, will now be primarily managed by CES institutions.
2. CES Honor Code: The Honor Code, a consistent feature across CES institutions, is given renewed significance in its role in advancing the religious mission of CES. The updates emphasize its role in shaping disciples of Jesus Christ within the CES framework.
3. Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations: Aiming to streamline and unify standards across campuses, the previously varied Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations are now restructured into a set of foundational principles and common expectations. This change is intended to maintain a clear and consistent approach while also allowing for meaningful individual expressions.

CES engaged students through focus groups at various institutions to incorporate their insights into the development of these updates. The students expressed enthusiasm for a heightened focus on gospel principles and a strong sense that these changes would encourage them to make more intentional decisions about their behavior, grooming, and dress.

Elder Clark G. Gilbert, the CES Commissioner of Education, articulated, “These changes will help everyone associated with CES further embrace the distinct purpose associated with CES institutions of higher education and to more fully accomplish our mission to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, the Church, and their communities.”

The new updates are designed to enhance unity and inspire both students and employees across CES institutions, fostering a covenant-keeping community that encourages spiritual growth and a closer relationship with the Savior. These changes will begin to be implemented on August 30, 2023, across Church-sponsored institutions, contributing to the development of well-rounded individuals who are guided by their faith in their pursuit of higher education.
