To mitigate the effect of financial pressure on Nigerians, in September 2025, the federal government announced a revocation of 5% tax on both voice and data usage across the country.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Nigerian Communications Commission Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) also affirmed the revocation to reduce the financial burden on Nigerians.
”The directive came directly from President Tinubu to ensure that Nigerians are not further burdened at a time of economic pressure,” Maida noted.
This was a welcoming development at the time. The 171 million telecom users noted this as relief for business and personal experiences.
It has been over four (4) months since the revocation pronouncement, users are still lamenting on the heavy charges by service providers.
A media veteran, Dr. Rufai Oseni made a similar public disclosure on Tuesday when he called the attention of the network and ISPs to his recent ordeal.
”Dear Network providers, Pls fix your data
I did 10 g and it lasted couple of days
This wasn’t the case before
”And there’s on network providers that told its former customers that they will migrate them when the network changed names and I am a customer but today my phone doesn’t have reception.
Is the NCC seeing all,” Rufai said on his X account.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in its response highlighted factors that may result in consumptions of such data.
”data usage can be affected by several factors beyond browsing, such as video quality, fast download speeds, background apps, and automatic updates,” NCC cleared.
There would be further details as NCC continues to educate the public on data usage.
