In a profound moment of spiritual significance, young adults from across Thailand were granted the privilege of being the first to step inside the newly unveiled Bangkok Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Traditionally, members of the news media and special guests are given the inaugural glimpse of a new temple, but this time, the honor was bestowed upon these enthusiastic young individuals on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

Elder Gerrit W. Gong, a distinguished member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, along with his wife, Susan, warmly greeted over 375 young adults as they entered the temple. The excitement in the air was palpable as this unique opportunity brought them closer to their faith and their leaders.

Suchawadee Prasithichai of Bang Khen, a district of Bangkok, shared her excitement, stating, “This is my special day. And I learned a lot about him [Elder Gong]. This is my first time to see Elder Gong.”

The day began with a devotional held by Elder Gong and his wife in a stake center adjacent to the temple. Recounting their experiences from a decade ago in Thailand, Sister Gong reflected, “A temple is such a beautiful thing to have right here in the middle of Bangkok. It will be a light to the world. I am grateful for your goodness and sacrifice which helped make it possible.”

Elder Gong drew upon the teachings of the Church President Russell M. Nelson, emphasizing that the temple encapsulates all that is believed and promised to the covenant people of God. He shared his personal perspective on the temple, describing it as a place of peace, purity, and purpose.

“Peace is something that we’re all seeking. Purity is something that we value. And we’re looking for purpose,” Elder Gong conveyed, inviting the young adults to share their own three words that encapsulate the essence of the temple.

Among those present, Jeeranan Sawasdeenaruemon shared her words: “holiness, family, and eternity.” She highlighted the temple’s role in uniting families forever. The temple represents not just a physical space, but a connection to the divine and eternal principles.

Upon entering the temple, the young adults felt an overwhelming sense of closeness to God. Pariwat Sengpoung described his experience, saying, “I feel closer with God, and Jesus really [is] closer.” Sawasdeenaruemon added, “I feel that the temple is really the house of God, and He was there.”

Surakrit Cherdchaiyaphum, another attendee, extended a heartfelt invitation to all, “I [would] really like to invite everyone to come and to see what we have and what Jesus Christ wants us to know.”

The Bangkok Temple will open its doors to the public for tours from September 1 through 16, 2023, excluding Sundays.
