The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCRMI, says the media will be key to solving the displacement crisis in Benue State.
The State Coordinator, Mr. Hamza Mohammed, made the call on Friday during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Makurdi. He said the Commission cannot meet the needs of refugees, returnees, and IDPs without accurate media reporting and public awareness.
Mr. Mohammed explained that NCRMI is currently profiling displaced persons, running skills acquisition programs, and working on durable solutions to help people return home and rebuild their lives safely.
Responding, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, welcomed the partnership. He said journalists in Benue have seen the impact of displacement firsthand, and have a duty to report humanitarian stories that are factual, balanced, and solution-focused — not sensational.
The NUJ also pledged to train journalists on conflict-sensitive and humanitarian reporting to improve coverage of the crisis.
