Justice: WSCIJ Condemns Alleged Police Assault on Pinnacle Daily Editor | ClipTV Online

Pinnacle Editor: Sunday Michael Ogwu

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) condemns the reported assault of Sunday Michael Ogwu, editor of Pinnacle Daily, allegedly by police and Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) personnel in Lugbe, Abuja, and urges a transparent, independent, and impartial investigation.

The incident, which involves physical violence using an electric cable and the destruction of Mr. Ogwu’s mobile phone, is deeply troubling and threatens press freedom, journalists’ safety, and citizens’ right to document public authorities’ conduct.

The Centre is especially concerned by the response from the FCT Police Command. Instead of clarifying the allegations and identifying the officers involved, the Command’s 21 August 2026 statement suggested that Mr. Ogwu “declined to honor (police) invitation” and instead circulated videos on social media to “mobilize public sentiment.”

This approach is troubling. A journalist accusing security personnel of assault should be able to seek medical treatment, legal advice, and support from press freedom groups without being accused of trying to obstruct an investigation or influence public opinion. Legally, he also has the right to speak publicly about his experience. Mr. Ogwu has reportedly sought medical attention and expressed willingness to meet with police with legal support. The police must ensure his rights, dignity, and safety are protected during such interactions.

This incident underscores broader challenges faced by journalists and citizens in Nigeria’s civic space. WSCIJ’s 2025 report, Silenced Voices, Shrinking Space, recorded 245 violations against journalists and civic freedoms, including harassment, intimidation, arrests, and assaults—mostly linked to Nigeria Police.

This event confirms concerns that attacks and restrictions continue to threaten the foundations of democracy. Safeguarding a free and safe civic space is essential for democracy, and journalists must be able to investigate and report on public interest issues without fear of violence, intimidation, or unlawful interference.

Therefore, the Centre urges the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to direct an independent investigation outside the implicated command structure. This should include reviewing deployment records, operational orders, patrol logs, CCTV footage, body-camera recordings, and other evidence to clarify what transpired.

If any misconduct is found, appropriate accountability measures should follow, including an apology, compensation for Mr. Ogwu’s destroyed device, and coverage of medical expenses. Security agencies must also issue clear directives affirming journalists’ rights to report and document public issues without obstruction or harm.

WSCIJ stands with Mr. Ogwu and all journalists under threat. The Centre reaffirms its commitment to investigative journalism, accountability, and social justice, advocating for a free, safe, and vibrant civic space where journalism and democracy can flourish.
