FRSC Remembers, Pays Respect to Road Traffic Victims. The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has joined the global world to remember all those killed and injured in road traffic accidents. The week-long event, which is underway, is billed for November 13 to November 19, 2023.

Speaking on the activities for the 2023 edition, the Sector Commander, in a press statement made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), noted that “The World day of remembrance for road traffic victims, is a day adopted and recognized by the UN via Resolution A/60/2005 to remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads.”

He stressed that “The annual global advocacy event is designated to recognize and pay respect to the thousands of people who are killed. Also the injured as a result of road traffic crashes and to sensitize the ‘’living’’ on safe road practices.”

Farinoye informed that the essence of this year’s event is to among others. It is to remember the lost souls, sensitize the living on the need to reduce carnages on our roads. Also to acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency service and advocate for better support for road traffic victims and their families. Lastly, to promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.

Among activities for the commemoration, according to the statement, are Public lecture, wreath laying and Hospital visitation. In addition, Jummat and Church memorial services and 17th and 19th November 2023 respectively.

FRSC Statistics

The Sector recalls that 376 cases of road traffic crashes involving 1,842 people and 662 vehicles. Out of these figures, 128 people lost their lives while 237 people sustained various degree of injuries. These were recorded between January and October 2023.

While advising the public to more cautious on the road, Farinoye disclosed that the probable causes of road mishaps are excessive speed, dangerous driving and overloading.
