NCoS: ACG Fatinikun Advocates Better Communication, Welfare in Ilaro Facility Overhaul | ClipTV Online

Assistant Controller General (ACG) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in charge of Lagos and Ogun States, Ope Fatinikun, has recently paid a working visit to the Ilaro Correctional Facility. Focusing on improving operational standards and inmate welfare. His quarterly visit aimed to address anomalies, educate the leadership, and provide critical training. His training includes inmate health management, welfare, and operational accountability.

Key Recommendations for Facility Operations

During this visit, ACG Fatinikun emphasized the importance of proper inmate communication management. Further noting that facilities should maintain no more than four official phone numbers for inmates to make calls. He highlighted the need for strict accountability, urging the facility’s leadership to streamline communication channels to prevent misuse.

Facility Inspection and Corrections

Furthermore, ACG Fatinikun conducted a comprehensive tour of the Ilaro facility, identifying areas requiring immediate improvement. He assured the leadership of his commitment to ensuring that standards are upheld, particularly in inmate welfare and facility management.

The ACG met with inmates to discuss their health conditions, the offences leading to their incarceration, and their access to court hearings. This interaction revealed valuable insights into the challenges faced by inmates and the need for improved judicial attendance.

He further  recommend transferring some of the inmates to Ago-Iwoye Correctional Center. This recommendation is to decongestant some of the cells.

Focus on Minors in Custody

Fatinikun also raised concerns about potential minors within the facility, underscoring the importance of verifying the ages of inmates. CSA Julius Afolabi, the officer in charge, noted that some inmates often claim to be 18 years old or older upon arrival to avoid being identified as minors. However, Afolabi assured the ACG that the facility would implement measures to properly screen and handle cases involving minors.

CSA Afolabi pledged to adhere to the ACG’s recommendations and instructions, emphasizing the facility’s commitment to maintaining high standards and addressing the identified gaps. He thanked the ACG for his hands-on approach and dedication to improving the correctional system.
