At the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, stirred conversations with his bold remarks on governance and the state of Nigeria. He claimed there are more “yahoo people” in government than on the streets, painting the country as a “crime scene” that urgently requires transformative leadership.
“When we talk about vices, don’t think it’s just the yahoo boys on the streets,” Obi said. “The truth is, there are more yahoo people in government than outside it because we’ve turned the entire country into a crime scene, with people both inside and outside stealing.”
Obi’s remarks highlighted the dire need for leaders with character, integrity, and moral fortitude to steer Nigeria in the right direction. He urged the graduates to take up the mantle of responsibility, using the knowledge they’ve gained to rebuild society.
“It’s not rocket science, but it’s not easy,” Obi said. “It’s about having a strong character and resisting the temptation to do wrong. You’ve gained knowledge today—use it to help change society. You’re victims of a system where past generations have failed to do what is right, and now you’re bearing the consequences.”
Obi’s speech was not just a critique of leadership but a rallying cry to the graduating class to become catalysts for positive change. He emphasized the role of education in transforming society and the importance of resisting corruption to build a brighter future.
Adding to the discourse, former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili stressed the significance of service in leadership.
“Service is the highest form of leadership,” she said. “See this graduation as an opportunity to serve—whether in your workspaces or in the country at large. The world of work today is vastly different from what it used to be, and you must master it.”
Both Obi and Ezekwesili’s messages resonated deeply with the graduates, encouraging them to embrace integrity and service as they step into the next phase of their lives. The event became a powerful reminder that the solutions to Nigeria’s challenges rest in the hands of a generation ready to prioritize character, innovation, and genuine service to humanity.
