National Cybercrime Center Takes Down Blackmail Syndicate Behind Microblogging Platform

In a significant stride against cyberstalking and online blackmail, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has apprehended three individuals associated with the notorious Gistlover blog. Acting on a petition from Hon and Dr. Mrs Seye Oladejo, the suspects were arrested for Conspiracy, Cyberstalking, and Threat to Life.

The apprehended suspects, Adebukola Kolapo, Nnedum Micheal Somtochukwu, and Isaac Akpokighe, all males aged 27, 25, and 30, are linked to the Gistlover family syndicate. The microblogging platform has been a source of public outcry due to its involvement in cyberstalking, incitement, blackmail, and other nefarious activities.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that Adebukola Kolapo, alias Omo oba Gistlover, played a significant role in creating over 80 percent of the Gistlover pages. He was responsible for scouting, editing, and captioning contents, including cyberstalking posts against the complainant. Adebukola, who received incentives such as car gifts and money, also contributed to laundering funds obtained from the illegal scheme. Digital forensic analysis led to the recovery of eight Gistlover pages created by Adebukola.

Nnedum Somtochukwu, the second suspect, participated in the conspiracy by redirecting traffic to new pages whenever the blog faced sanctions. He received incentives for referrals and was found sharing defamatory remarks with the head of the syndicate.

Isaac Akpokighe, the third suspect, imitated the Gistlover blog by creating several similar pages. Digital forensics revealed four Gistlover pages created by Isaac Apkokogho.

The suspects will face charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigation. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, warns against partnerships supporting illegal activities of such blogs and others engaging in similar offenses. He commends the NPF-NCCC, led by CP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to citizens’ safety in both physical and digital spaces.
