The Nigeria Police Force has reviewed and upheld the earlier dismissal of two officers, Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious, from the Kwara State Police Command. The officers had alleged wrongful dismissal in a viral video and subsequent publication. However, a thorough investigation by the Special Investigation Unit, Force Criminal Investigations Department, revealed that their dismissal was justified due to misconduct during the course of their duties.
Sgt. Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious were attached to the Public Complaint Bureau, Office of the Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police Command. Their primary responsibility was to handle complaints of police unprofessionalism and misconduct. However, during an investigation into a case of conspiracy and advance fee fraud in February 2020, the officers engaged in misconduct that warranted their dismissal.
The investigation found that the officers had coerced a suspect to withdraw a large sum of money from his account, which was collected by Corporal Glorious. They then demanded further bribes to close the case, violating their duties and code of conduct as police officers. The evidence presented during their trial, including the conversion of a mobile phone for personal use, substantiated the allegations against them.
Multiple reviews and recommendations from panels have upheld the dismissal of Sgt. Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious. They will now face prosecution for conspiracy, theft, and false and malicious publications against the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to discipline, accountability, and professionalism within its ranks. The dismissal of the officers demonstrates their determination to root out misconduct and uphold justice and fairness. The public can trust that necessary actions will be taken to maintain the integrity of the Police Force.
