In the wake of a viral video capturing police misconduct, the Ogun State Police Command has taken immediate action against the officers involved, signaling a commitment to uphold ethical standards.
The video, which surfaced on social media, depicted alleged assault and extortion by police officers at a checkpoint near Tai Solarin University of Education. The complaint filed by Soyemi Abidemi Funmilola on January 13, 2024, prompted a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The investigation not only confirmed the officers’ misconduct but also traced the extorted money to a specific account, which has since been recovered and marked as evidence. The Inspector, Rank and File involved in the incident have been detained for an orderly room trial, and an official query has been issued to the officers, following the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, psc.
CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha reiterated the police command’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards and emphasized the importance of respecting the fundamental human rights of citizens. Lectures on these principles have been conducted for officers and men of the Command, and any officer found infringing on the rights of the public will face sanctions.
The family of the complainant has been contacted, and ongoing communication with the Commissioner of Police assures accountability for the officers’ failure to adhere to the force’s rules and regulations. The Ogun State Police Command aims to ensure the safety and security of residents and their properties.
The results of the orderly room proceedings will be made public upon the conclusion of the investigation, underscoring the commitment of the Ogun State Police Command to uphold the rule of law and maintain transparency in its relationship with the public.
