Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Michael F. Crotty as the new Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador) to Nigeria. This announcement was made in a communiqué issued by the Apostolic Nunciature (Embassy of the Holy See) to Nigeria and endorsed by Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

About Archbishop Michael F. Crotty

Archbishop Michael F. Crotty, a native of Mitchelstown, Cork, Ireland, was born on March 26, 1970. He was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Cloyne (Ireland) on July 3, 1994. Archbishop Crotty brings extensive experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the Catholic Church.

Significance of the Appointment

Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for appointing Archbishop Crotty to Nigeria. He noted the historical connection between Ireland and Nigeria, highlighting that Archbishop Crotty is the first Apostolic Nuncio from Ireland to Nigeria. Similarly, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo was the first Apostolic Nuncio from Nigeria to Ireland.

“We appreciate Archbishop Crotty’s acceptance of serving in Nigeria and assure him of our full support and cooperation,” Archbishop Ugorji stated.

Roles and Responsibilities

An apostolic nuncio, also known as a papal nuncio, is an ecclesiastical diplomat serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or an international organization. Archbishop Crotty will build on the good works of his predecessor, Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi, fostering relations between the Holy See and Nigeria.
