Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft have apprehended eight suspected stowaways during an attempt to board two speedboats. The suspects were sighted by the patrol team of NNS Beecroft on July 13, 2024, during a routine patrol.
Details of the Arrest
According to a statement from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, five of the suspects admitted their intention to travel abroad. The incident occurred when the patrol team spotted the suspects attempting to board MV Northernlight via its rudder compartment.
The suspects and their speedboats have been handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service, Lagos State Port and Marine Command for further investigation. This arrest brings the total number of stowaways apprehended by NNS Beecroft between January and July to 33.
Additional Rescues and Foiled Sea Robbery

In the past week, from July 9-13, 2024, the Nigerian Navy has also rescued eight female victims of human trafficking and two drowning fishermen. Additionally, a sea robbery attempt was foiled during this period.
On July 9, 2024, the Quick Response Team of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Badagry intercepted a wooden passenger boat with eight females aged between 18-23 years en route to the Benin Republic. It was determined that they were being trafficked by an unidentified agent. The victims have been handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and an investigation to identify the agent and trafficking syndicate is ongoing.
