There was palpable tension at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex this morning as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took over the premises, reportedly sealing off the offices of Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House.
DSS personnels, heavily armed had assumed control of the Assembly premises in Alausa, Ikeja, around 10am on Monday. They conducted thorough physical and vehicular security searches on lawmakers, staffs, and visitors.
The Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, arrived at the complex around 11 AM but was denied access to her office and the legislative chambers by security operatives. A dramatic scene ensued as DSS officials, dressed in black jackets and helmets, blocked her entry, leading to a struggle between security forces and lawmakers who supported the Speaker.
Amid speculations that Meranda was being pressured to resign, lawmakers loyal to her vehemently opposed such a move. There was shout of “Meranda, it is you we want!” this echoed as legislators expressed their support for her leadership. They subsequently passed a vote of confidence in her.
Despite the initial standoff, Speaker Mojisola Meranda eventually took charge of the Assembly’s proceedings, signaling that she still maintains control of the House.
The DSS exact reason for the action remains unclear. However there are speculations it may be related to ongoing political tensions in the Assembly. There has been ongoing tensions in the House since the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025.
Developing updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
