Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and the 2023 presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the press today to officially respond to the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petition Court regarding the 2023 presidential election.
Mr. Abubakar’s decision to approach the court followed the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate were the winners of the February 25, 2023, Presidential Election.
In his statement, Mr. Abubakar expressed his unwavering belief in the sanctity of the court as the sanctuary of justice. He emphasized his extensive experience with legal battles throughout his political career and commended the judiciary as a pillar of justice.
The former Vice President raised concerns about the management of the last presidential election by INEC and asserted that the court has a duty to address the precedents set by the election. He particularly highlighted the compromise of the gains made in ensuring transparent elections through the deployment of technology.
Mr. Abubakar stated that his pursuit of justice through the legal process aims to strengthen democracy by upholding the principles of fair hearing. He expressed disappointment in the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, believing that it falls short of delivering substantial justice.
Despite his disappointment, Mr. Abubakar affirmed his confidence in the judiciary and declared his intention to exercise his constitutionally guaranteed rights of appeal to the higher court, which, in this case, is the Supreme Court.
In conclusion, Mr. Abubakar urged his supporters to remain steadfast and recalled the wisdom of his late leader and mentor, Shehu Yar’Adua, who taught him that losing a battle is less important than losing the war. He emphasized the importance of striving for credible elections in Nigeria and expressed hope for success in the quest to restore confidence in the electoral system.
The former Vice President’s decision to appeal the judgment sets the stage for further legal proceedings and underscores his commitment to the pursuit of justice in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
