The Lagos Mainland Local Government Area Executive Chairman, Hon. Mayor Jubril Kolawole Emilagba, has intensified efforts to improve education in the LGA. The endeavor supports small businesses through the distribution of empowerment items to residents.
Education
One of the projects is the renovation of UNA Primary School on Freeman Street, Oyingbo, which had reportedly suffered years of neglect and inadequate classroom facilities.
The school could previously accommodate pupils only from Basic 1 to Basic 4, while pupils in Basic 5 and Basic 6 had to attend classes at St. Jude’s Anglican Primary School, located on the same street.
Emilagba’s intervention is aimed at improving the learning environment and expanding access to a conducive educational facility. He noted that his goal is to ensure the children in the local government area are able to compete with international pupils.
Accountability
The development projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s repeated calls for Nigerians to hold state and local governments accountable. Highlighting the funds received from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), which are intended to support development at the subnational level.
Beyond education, Emilagba recently embarked on a large-scale empowerment programme targeting residents engaged in small businesses and vocational activities.
Under the initiative, 200 chest freezers with a capacity of 100 liters each were distributed to entrepreneurs in the frozen food and soft drinks businesses. According to the chairman, the equipment would help beneficiaries improve their businesses and generate quicker returns on investments (ROI).
Items Distributed
The local government also distributed 200 sewing machines to fashion designers operating within Lagos Mainland. This included some who reside outside the area but conduct their businesses within the council’s jurisdiction.
In addition, 200 grinding machines were provided to support residents engaged in grinding and related businesses.
Other items distributed included 250 3kg gas cylinders, each accompanied by two packs of noodles. Other received 300 packs of bottled water and 300 packs of soft drinks.
Emilagba Shares
In addition to the physical items distributed at the October Mega Empowerment, the chairman invited women in the LGA to present the following day. He stated that Dangote shares would be distributed to residents. Mayor stressed that 1,000 would be bought for each woman available in the program. He further mentioned that the program is specifically for women in Lagos Mainland LGA.
Adding that this would help secure their children’s future and enable them to support their family as the shares grow.
Emilagba Challenges
The chairman acknowledged that the empowerment programme could have covered more beneficiaries but for financial constraints.
He disclosed that since assuming office in 2025, his administration had settled debts totaling more than ₦500 million.
He added his administration is making a stride to repair damages from previous government, noting them as challenges himself and his team members are addressing. Emilagba cited an example of a piece of land by Oyingbo Market that could have been acquired and become a part of development to the local government. He, however, urged the residents to be more patient as they would enjoy the dividends of democracy.
His October Mega Empowerment interventions reflect the local government’s stated focus on improving public education, supporting livelihoods. They also indicate his interest in strengthening the capacity of small-scale businesses to contribute to economic activity within the area.
