Children’s Day: CPN Focus on Inclusion and Safety

The 2024 National Children’s Day celebration, organized by the Child Protection Network (CPN) and themed “Inclusion for Every Child,” was both educative and enjoyable for children and their caregivers. The event featured various activities including drama, games, and song presentations, providing an engaging platform for children to express themselves and have fun.

SGBV

A significant part of the celebration was dedicated to discussing the challenges and opportunities when children speak out against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). The event included a lecture on drugs, simplified for children’s understanding, to help them navigate such issues.

AWLA

The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) highlighted the difficulties faced in handling SGBV cases. Amanda Demechi Asagba, President of AWLA, explained the role of AWLA in supporting SGBV victims. She recounted experiences where families reporting SGBV faced marginalization and attacks, which discouraged others from speaking out.

AWLA steps in by relocating victims and their families to shelters where they can heal from trauma. They also empower children to present their cases in court confidently. Asagba emphasized the need for societal support to ensure these children are cared for after reporting such incidents, including their education and daily needs.

Lagos State Domestic Violence Agency

Onyechefula Ann, a Program Officer from the Lagos State Domestic Violence Agency, discussed the services available to SGBV survivors. She emphasized continuous sensitization and the importance of the response team, which includes the police, judiciary, and various support services, in addressing survivors’ needs.

Ann mentioned the Lagos State Trust Fund, designated for SGBV survivors, which helps cover immediate needs such as relocation or school transfers. Survivors can access this fund through the toll-free line 08000333333.

CPN

Aderonke Oyelakin, Children Protection  (CPN), Coordinator Lagos State emphasized the significance of Children’s Day in recognizing and showcasing children’s potentials.

She reiterated CPN’s commitment to ensuring every child is protected from abuse and has access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities to achieve their dreams.

Oyelakin stressed the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children to grow and thrive. The celebration also provided an opportunity for children to voice their needs and expectations from stakeholders in securing their future.

“Children should be celebrated not just on children day”, she concluded.
