Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Honors Late Alhaji Lateef Jakande with Inaugural Annual Lecture | Cliptv Online

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced the institution of an annual memorial lecture to honor its pioneer President and former Governor of Lagos State, the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande. The maiden edition of the lecture is scheduled to take place in Lagos on August 7, 2023.

In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by NGE’s President, Eze Anaba, and the General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the professional body of editors in Nigeria stated that the decision to institute the lecture was born out of a deliberate program to cultivate a culture of appreciation.

The theme of the inaugural lecture is “Lateef Jakande: The Man, His Journalism, His Politics.” It will feature a seasoned veteran journalist and Fellow of NGE, Chief Felix Adenaike, as the keynote speaker. The event will be chaired by former Nigerian Ambassador to Brazil and celebrated columnist, Amb. Patrick Dele Cole.

The Guild expressed its anticipation for the presence of distinguished personalities, including publishers, state governors, captains of the private sector, journalism students, members of the political class, and others. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

Providing a historical context, the NGE highlighted that it was founded on May 20, 1961, as the Guild of Newspaper Editors of Nigeria, later renamed Nigerian Guild of Editors to encompass colleagues in the broadcast media. The late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, who served as its Founding President, played a pivotal role in bringing together editors to form the body, aimed at addressing common challenges and fostering relationships between media owners and journalists.

Alhaji Jakande, whose name is held in high esteem whenever committed service is mentioned in the media and public service, went on to serve as the first civilian governor of Lagos State and later as the federal Minister of Works and Housing.

The NGE expressed its commitment to nurturing the memory of Alhaji Lateef Jakande and the appreciation of his exemplary contributions to the media and society. The Annual Lecture seeks to provide a platform for dialogue on developments impacting the media and society at large, honoring the legacy of a remarkable individual and fostering growth and progress in Nigeria’s media landscape.
