Collaborative Effort Aims to Enhance Gender-Responsive Security Operations and Empower Women in Northeast Nigeria

In a significant stride towards gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women, in partnership with the Government of Nigeria, has launched the second phase of the Enhancing Gender-Responsive Security Operations and Community Dialogue Project. This initiative, backed by the Government of Germany, is geared towards boosting gender responsiveness within security sector institutions and addressing security concerns of women and girls, particularly in the conflict-ridden Northeast region of Nigeria.

During the launch event, Beatrice Eyong, UN Women’s Resident Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing support provided by the Government of Germany. She underlined that the primary aim of the project is to promote gender-responsive security operations and foster meaningful community dialogues across Nigeria.

Mrs. Monilola Udoh, the Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs, lauded both UN Women and the German government for their partnership in bringing this project to fruition. She emphasized the crucial role of early education in reshaping societal attitudes towards gender equality and voiced her enthusiasm for the project’s continued efforts.

Peter Mancha, the Project Manager, acknowledged the achievements made during the first phase of the project. However, he highlighted the prevailing issue of underrepresentation of women in key decision-making roles within security institutions. The second phase aims to bridge this gap and foster an environment where women’s contributions are fully recognized and valued.

The Inspector General of Police, represented by AIG Aishatu Abubakar, reiterated the police force’s dedication to gender-related issues. She disclosed the initiation of a mentoring program within the Nigeria Police Force, in alignment with the adopted gender policy.

AVM Ndace, representing the Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized the indispensable role women play in promoting peace and security. He underscored the significance of women’s involvement in mediation and reconciliation efforts for preventing conflicts. Reaffirming their commitment to upholding and implementing gender policies, he highlighted the armed forces’ dedication to gender equality.

Concluding the event, Mr. Lansana Wonneh, the Deputy Representative of UN Women, expressed gratitude to the leaders of security agencies and the Nigerian government for their unwavering support. He called upon them to continue their commitment, stressing that their ongoing backing is vital to ensure the success of the project’s second phase. The collaborative efforts of UN Women, the Government of Nigeria, and international partners highlight a proactive stance in empowering women and enhancing security operations in the region.
