Hon. Dr. Saheed Okeneye (FAME)

Celebrating, Late Engr. Anthony Olufunsho Williams (Funsho Williams), who died on July 27, 2006, a political associate and mentee, Hon. Dr. Saheed Okeneye, popularly known as SEADORF, has named the political figure as an icon.

SEADORF noted Funsho Williams, a former Lagos State Commissioner during Col. Olagunsoye Oyinlola Military Governorship as an exemplary leader.

SEADORF is a candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) which is a coalition party with the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He is vying for the Lagos Mainland Constituency II, House of Assembly. SEADORF paid a glowing tribute to the late Lagos politician at the 20 years remembrance. Okeneye described him as a model of integrity, fairness and people-centred leadership. He noted the Funsho Williams political ideals remain relevant two decades after his passing.

Speaking during the commemorative event at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba, Hon Okeneye recalled meeting Williams at age of 19. He further stated that they were both Alma mater of the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association.

According to him, following Williams closely shaped his understanding of politics and public service.

“I learnt politics from the late Engineer Funsho Williams. From the moment I started following him, I saw someone who never believed in dirty politics. He was a fair man who stood for equity, justice and the will of the people,” he said.

Furthermore, he noted that Williams consistently taught his supporters that political leadership should be determined by the will of the people rather than force or manipulation.

“He always told us that if the people want you, you will be there, and if they don’t, you cannot force your way in,” he recalled.

Reflecting on Williams’ enduring legacy, FAME stated that the continued remembrance of the late politician 20 years after his death is a testament to the impact of his character and leadership.

According to Okeneye, Williams was more than a politician. He described him as “a school of thought” whose humility and accessibility endeared him to people from all walks of life.

“He was always down to earth. Sometimes you would see him on the streets playing drafts with ordinary people. That simplicity made him unique,” he said.

He urged today’s politicians to embrace the values of peaceful and issue-based politics. He stressed that political contests should never become a do-or-die affair.

“We should all learn to play politics the right way. Politics should not be about violence or desperation. If the people want you, they will elect you. If they don’t, you should accept their decision,” he added.

The tribute highlighted the enduring influence of the late Engineer Funsho Williams, whose commitment to fairness, humility and democratic principles continues to inspire many within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Hon. Dr. Saheed Okeneye (SEADORF) is also a Fellow Academy Management Executive (FAME), Colorado, USA.
