In a determined and ongoing effort to combat terrorism and bolster security, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has launched a series of intensified operations across the Lake Chad region. Led by Lt. Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the MNJTF’s mission is to not only quash terrorist activities but also to revive economic prospects in the area.
Recent reports indicate significant progress, with multiple terrorists surrendering and a major arms shipment intercepted en route to insurgent groups. Spanning from February 10 to 20, operations in all four MNJTF sectors yielded positive outcomes, including the elimination of two Boko Haram militants in Cameroon and the recovery of ammunition belts vital to the group’s operations.
Further successes were noted as four Boko Haram members voluntarily surrendered to troops stationed in Chad and Nigeria, resulting in the seizure of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition. Troops in Chad carried out impactful offensives, inflicting casualties on terrorists and seizing critical logistics such as canoes and explosives, effectively disrupting terrorist networks.
The MNJTF’s strategy also included precision airstrikes by the Chadian Air Force, targeting Boko Haram strongholds along the southern rim of Lake Chad. These strikes resulted in the neutralization of several terrorists and the destruction of their equipment, further hampering their operations.
Meanwhile, in Niger, MNJTF troops intercepted an arms smuggling attempt near the Niger-Chad border, seizing a significant arsenal comprising rifles, magazines, and ammunition. However, the operations came at a cost, with two soldiers—one from Nigeria and another from Chad—sacrificing their lives, while three others sustained injuries.
Despite these sacrifices, the MNJTF remains resolute in its commitment to restoring peace and security in the Lake Chad basin. Their relentless efforts underscore a dedication to supporting economic growth and ensuring the free movement of people within the region, signaling a significant stride in the fight against terrorism.
