A recent revelation by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding special funds sent to senators’ accounts for their vacation has sparked outrage across Nigeria. Former All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesperson Timi Frank has described the incident as a “show of shame” and called for Akpabio’s immediate resignation.
In a viral video, Timi Frank criticized Akpabio’s announcement, stating that it was a mockery of democracy and an insensitive move when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardships. Akpabio had disclosed that the National Assembly Management had distributed funds to senators’ accounts to facilitate their holiday enjoyment.
The revelation has ignited a debate about the apparent disparity between government officials’ privileges and the challenges faced by ordinary citizens. Frank’s demand for Akpabio’s resignation stems from what he sees as the Senate President’s failure to demonstrate leadership in the face of national economic difficulties.
Adding to the unfolding drama, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, also issued a statement urging President Bola Tinubu to allow his academic records from Chicago State University to be released to a court in Nigeria. This request comes after Tinubu filed a motion to prevent the release of his university academic records to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who had requested them.
Frank expressed concern over what he views as double standards from the United States, suggesting that actions taken seriously in their country should be upheld when it concerns Nigeria. The ongoing controversy further highlights the complexities of political maneuvering and transparency in Nigeria’s political landscape.
