Tarzan Boat Jetty Incident: MD Ganiyu Balogun Calls for Enhanced Waterway Safety | ClipTV Online

Tarzan Boat MD, Mr. Ganiyu Balogun

Following the recent unfortunate incident at the Tarzan Boat Jetty, the Managing Director, Mr. Ganiyu Balogun, who also serves as the National President of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON), has shared his perspective on the matter.

In an exclusive interview with The Press Society (TPS), Mr. Balogun clarified his absence during the accident and provided insights into its cause. According to witness accounts, the incident was attributed to foggy weather conditions that obscured visibility on the water.

The boat operator should have waited until the fog cleared before embarking on the trip,” Balogun stated. However, he explained that the operator succumbed to pressure from the passengers. “The commuters were reportedly pestering the operator, expressing concerns about being late to work, which led to the decision to proceed despite the cloudy weather,” he clarified.

Challenges on the Waterways

Mr. Balogun also used the platform to shed light on the challenges faced on Nigeria’s waterways. He emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures. While he acknowledged the efforts of the Lagos State Government, he stated that more proactive measures are required. Also noting it is to ensure the safety of commuters.

“Just as we have the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on the roads, there should be a similar setup on the waterways. Such a response team could drastically reduce the number of accidents,” he suggested.

Balogun acknowledged the financial implications of deploying numerous safety boats. He however stressed the value of human lives. “Life cannot be quantified with money,” he asserted.

Recommendations from ATBOWATON

As part of ATBOWATON’s commitment to improving water transport safety, the association has been actively engaging with the government and proposing solutions. One notable recommendation is the establishment of floating checkpoints.

Balogun explained, “The floating checkpoints will serve as regulatory points on the waterways to ensure compliance with safety measures. These checkpoints will monitor and control passenger loading, ensuring boats are not overloaded and that all safety protocols are adhered to.”

He highlighted that such measures would significantly curb overloading and ensure passengers abide by boarding rules, reducing the risks of waterway accidents.

Tarzan Commitment to Safety

Balogun reiterated ATBOWATON’s dedication to enhancing safety on Nigerian waterways. “Our focus is to collaborate with stakeholders, including the government, to implement practical solutions that prioritize commuter safety,” he emphasized.

As investigations into the Tarzan Jetty incident continue, the association remains committed to raising awareness about waterway safety and ensuring the necessary measures are in place to prevent future occurrences.
