In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has nominated a new Governor for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a complete management team. These nominations are now awaiting confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso has been nominated by President Tinubu to serve as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Dr. Cardoso’s appointment, if confirmed, will see him lead the CBN for an initial term of five years. This move is in accordance with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which grants the President of Nigeria the authority to appoint the Governor and four Deputy Governors for the CBN, subject to Senate confirmation.

In addition to the nomination of Dr. Cardoso as CBN Governor, President Tinubu has also approved the nomination of four individuals to serve as Deputy Governors of the CBN, also for an initial term of five years, pending Senate confirmation. The nominees for the position of Deputy Governors are as follows:

  1. Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro
  2. Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo
  3. Mr. Philip Ikeazor
  4. Dr. Bala M. Bello

These nominations align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which places a strong emphasis on implementing critical reforms within the Central Bank of Nigeria. The President’s vision is to bolster confidence among Nigerians and international partners, contributing to the restructuring of the Nigerian economy for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.

As the nominations await Senate review and confirmation, they represent a significant step in shaping the future of Nigeria’s economic policies and strategies. The nation now looks to the Senate for a thorough evaluation and endorsement of these nominees, in the pursuit of a vibrant and resilient economy that benefits all Nigerians.
